Aug 27th at Cause Spirits and Sound Bar

This show is not to be missed!
PIP SKID

“Pip Skid is the ugly truth. He is a rap firebrand whose music transcends its humble prairie origins. His unvarnished commentary on political and social issues has earned him pockets of admirers all over the world. His songs are propelled by imagery and messages that provoke people to question, think, and act. Pip Skid can be repulsive, he can be inspiring, but he can never be dull.
Far from a newcomer, Pip Skid has been writing and performing for half his life. Starting out with the seminal group Farm Fresh from his native Brandon, Manitoba, Pip was at the forefront of a burgeoning hip hop scene in central Canada in the early 1990′s. He is a cornerstone of the success of indie label Peanuts & Corn Records and has featured on many of their 40 releases.

Beyond Farm Fresh, Pip has recorded four solo projects, the most recent being 2007′s “The Pip Donahue Show” EP. He has also recorded as a member of such high profile groups as Fermented Reptile, Hip Hop Wieners, Taking Care Of Business and Break Bread. Well received by both fans and critics, these recordings have made Pip heavily in demand for guest appearances on more than a dozen other albums.
By day, Pip Skid teaches youth how to make music with his “Make Rap Happen” program. In high demand with schools, community centres and cultural groups, the program touches on the history of hip hop music and basic techniques of rapping, deejaying, performing and recording. The underlying emphasis however is on self-confidence, self-expression, teamwork and having fun. Knowing what a great emotional outlet music can be, Pip treasures the opportunity to pass the tradition on to kids who may not always have the emotional supports they need.
The Pip Skid live show is legendary. When he takes the stage, the reclusive man becomes the outspoken artist. Funny and frenetic, animated and volatile, but above all, entertaining, Pip is the animal freed from his cage. His performances are a powerful workout for both the audience and the artist — draining and gratifying all at once. Pip Skid has toured his chaotic live show extensively throughout North America and Europe.
After 17 years of making music, Pip Skid couldn’t be relevant if he wasn’t sincere.
His method and his sound evolve with each project but the thread that ties them all together is strong. Forces that shape our lives, for better or worse, all come under Pip’s microscope – food, politics, violence, love, hate, pop culture, subculture, and social justice — concepts that thinking people can relate to.
Pip Skid keeps evolving and rap music stays fresh. That’s the ugly truth
Speed Dial 7
Speed Dial 7 is Tom De Geeter’s one-man band. You may know De Geeter as one half of Zucchini Drive (2nd Rec/Hue/Marathon of Dope), one third of Cavemen Speak (Shadowanimals/Subversiv/Hue), one fourth of Nuccini (2nd Rec), and one fifth of Gunporn (Shadowanimals/Subversiv). You do the math.
Originally from Kortrijk, Belgium, De Geeter has evolved from hardcore-kid to alternative rap teenager, to mental-patient adult and beyond. His sound has been influenced by world travels with Zucchini Drive, and by learning the ways of the sword. A meltingpot of inspiration always provides a surprise in the folds of Speed Dial 7. De Geeter puts his vocals on whatever he thinks will work, from sample-based foundations, to original melodies, to the guitar hooks of Mich Decruyenaere (from the legendary Hitch, Be), to the drumming of Pieter Blancke (from postrock-outfit Salvador, Be). You can expect to hear a mix of sixties psychedelic rock (Moving Sidewalks, Jimi Hendrix), folk (Stephen Stills, Manassas), and pioneers of the 80s (Afrika Bambaataa) in De Geeter’s next release. But it’s better not try expect anything in the Speed Dial 7 universe
Yy
In a time where Hip Hop music has become the dominant sound on Popular radio, more and more fans are desperate for a return to the essence of the art form, where lyrics and flows were a craft. With his new Peanuts & Corn Records release "Hold the Fort Down," Yy steps into the arena with a full compliment of both.
Yy, a Hip Hop music addict since the days of Run DMC and The Fat Boys, began his own career as an MC in his friend's dorm room at the University of Manitoba. Through Break Bread Crew member John Smith, Yy met The Gumshoe Strut, Satchel Paige, and General Gyst, and in 2000 the friends formed the crew Your Brother in My Backpack, now one of the most visible groups in the Winnipeg Hip Hop scene.
Along with The Gumshoe Strut, Yy released the Milch & Alegra EP in 2000 on Your Brothers Records. Since then, Yy has appeared on the Peanuts & Corn Factory Seconds Compilation and on the Peanuts & Corn Summer 2002 12". Yy has also been frequently performing in Winnipeg and across the Prairies, and his stage presence is now that of a seasoned veteran MC, with a lyrical delivery that grabs the audience by the collar and gives them a shake.
Yy continues in a legacy of MCs like the Hieroglyphics or Freestyle Fellowship, who's agenda has always been to elevate the craft of lyrics and flow. On "Hold the Fort Down," Yy appears more than prepared to accept the responsibility of this legacy. Over 2 years in the making, Yy has experienced much during the recording of this record, including the birth of his first daughter. The result is an eight song EP that represent a young man mature beyond his years.

DJ Co-op
With ten years of experience under his belt, DJ Co-op likes to think of himself as Winnipeg's most versatile DJ. From the early days of throwing underground hip hop nights and dance parties, to earning a spot in the 2005 Canadian DMC battle finals. His fresh and intelligent mixes have blown up Canadian campus radio charts, and gotten love online from several taste-making sites including discobelle.net. Most recently Co-op has been found backing up Epitaph/Big Dada rapper Cadence Weapon and Foultone/Marathon of Dope MC Pip Skid. He's also incredibly good at pinball.

Also this evening we'll have locals -

Remo Williamz www.reverbnation.com/remowilliamz

Hip Hop, all to often, has jinxed itself into a corner, promoting such unrealistic ideals to the youth, the masses,
the collective, that it has become a shadow of its former self. The deep, fulfilling material praised in the
early 90's is a thing of the past, in most instances. Thankfully not all artists have forgotten the operative word is"art":...

Hailing from Minneapolis, the 30 year old MC, Remo Williamz, time & again shows great versatility & perspective in his work.
Making music since the late 90's, Remo continues to wow listeners with a polished sound, as well as an uncommon
stage presence. The odds seem to be in favor of such an overtly positive storyteller & intellectual artist. Time will only tell..

DANIEL HEAVENS

Daniel Heavens has been on the move, spending time in Portland, playing shows through out the northwest and making music. It's been a bit of a vision quest for him. He's currently back in Minneapolis working on a new project ("Tenure" working title) that is set for release sometime in March. The projects production is headed up by Neighbor and has a bit of a dark undertone with a touch of history. Switched up styles and blended tracks make the project flow like a serotonin roller coaster. When finished he plans to head back west and take his new van (Connie) on a little trip hitting up some new venues and faces. Be sure to stay posted, it's gonna be a good ride.
More soon, gotta go.
